Description
Christian communities can and have to be foreshadowings of the coming Kingdom of God, the Kingdom of Peace and ultimate reconciliation. This is exemplified in many of the Church’s communal practices, of which the celebration of the Eucharist is the most central and rich in its symbolic character. However, both the Eucharist itself, and the real and lived communities point to the fact that this foreshadowing is not unproblematic. What if the community is divided by conflict? This paper explores a conceptual framework that might be helpful in dealing with intra-church or inter-church conflict. How can a Church community be a token of God’s peace even if it is divided itself? What practical steps may help Church communities to deal with (possible) conflict? Drawing from both practical-theological and systematic-theological resources, this paper reveals how real and unidealized Christian practices may still be tokens of God’s peace.
