Abstract

In 1921 the Theological Institute in Kolozsvár conferred an honorary professorship on the Dutch minister Jan Anthony Cramer (1864–1952). He was unable to travel to Kolozsvár immediately, partly because he had simultaneously been appointed professor of Church History at Utrecht University. However, in September 1923 he made the journey and delivered his inaugural lecture. The question addressed here is what motives the theological institute had for granting this Dutch minister an honorary professorship. Aspects of his activities have already been discussed in my book, the translation of which was published by Kálvin Publishing House: Holland-magyar protestáns kapcsolatok a két világháború között (Budapest, 2023), but here his activities are examined from a Hungarian perspective. The conclusion is that Jan Cramer’s contributions to the Hungarians were substantial and that this tribute was well deserved.
