    Abstract

Matthew's portrait of Peter is ambivalent: he appears as a spokesmen for the disciples and as the rock on which Jesus will build his church, but also as a stumbling block who opposes Jesus and even denies knowing him. In a survey of Peter's role in the Gospel of Matthew, I interpret this ambivalence as illustrating Matthew's view of leadership in the church: according to earthly standards, Peter would be discredited, but in God's kingdom, he is made fit for leadership by being humbled by his failures.
