Abstract

In 2025, the City Council of Rotterdam prohibited the ordinary and extraordinary registrars of Civil Status to speak about religion in solemnizing marriages, because of the separation of “church” and state in the Netherlands. In this contribution I focus on the legal position and authority of the Extraordinary Registrar of Civil Status, because I received questions from the network of these registrars with view to the separation of church and state, the civil marriage and the prohibition to include religious aspects at the solemnization of the civil marriage on the wedding day.
